An explanation of our hopes and a listing of current mission happenings
Our names are Michael J Miller Jr. and Glenda E Miller and we are fulltime missionaries in Honduras. Currently we work in the prison system of Honduras offering spiritual guidance and social rehabilitation as well as developing micro-businesses with the prisoners. Michael is President and founder of Border Buddies Ministries Inc. and is also President of Asociacion Kairos Honduras Ministerio de Prisiones. We are sponsored by friends of various denominations in the New York region.
We are looking for groups who want to come to Honduras and to help in working with the public schools. The public schools are run very different than in the United States. In the States the schools are taken care by your taxes. However in Honduras the tax pays for only the salaries of the Honduran teachers. School supplies as books, chalk, markers, paper, Encyclopedias, dictionaries, desks, repairs on buildings, computers and so much more is all dependant upon the families of the neighborhood. Of course the neighborhoods are not the best for financial resources. Most families for these public schools that we want to go after to help can hardly feed their own families let alone help with school needs. We were told by the Director of the school that once in awhile the parents do get together and take care of minor repairs on the schools. There is a school in our neighborhood that we have started to help by groups that come from the United States. We want to prevent the children from getting involved in gang activity that is huge and wide spreading. There are over 15, 000 people belonging to the gangs. Our rehabilitation is working with two of the largest gangs. Another reason we want to help these children that belong to the public schools is because we want to give a chance to them. Glenda and I were moved when exploring the local schools in our area. What we discovered was that the schools are in very bad shape and do not have enough supplies for the teachers to teach with. The private sector is different. They have the best of everything because it is funded by those who can afford to send their children to such schools. This is not fair to the future Honduran and to society. We need to change the imbalance of this system by working on one school at a time. Also we desire and so do the teachers and the principal of the school desire for you to inter act with the children. This is where you can come into play.
FUTURE MISSION PROJECTS
Because of the success at Escuela de Venezuela, we now have seven other schools who have asked for help. Beginning in 2010 we will commence upgrades for Escuela de Aramas Furerzas, in a Colonia called the Menitas which is in the Colonia 21 de Octubre. The vision for this school is to replace bad roofs, raise a 2nd floor on the main class room building; build a cafeteria where a wooden storage building currently stands; place a cap on the concrete sluice-way that passes through the school property; and help them expand from a primary only school to one that also holds classes for secondary grades as well.
