Roberto Sosa School Lunch Program – October 2013

With six teams, one year and two months of work the Roberto Sosa School is serving hot meals and using their new classrooms. The top photo is with the upmost praise to our Lord Jesus Christ in serving the first child his lunch. It was a long haul not in building but in changing the minds of parents, teachers and those who were watching to see if this program was going to work or not. We met with the parents weeks before our last team came down to work in Honduras to organize those parents who had an interest in serving the students in their school. Many couldn’t comprehend in how the program was going to work. Many questioned how can this school feed 335 children with the food that is donated by the government and only paying 10 Lempiras each child per month. 10 lempiras is 50cents. This is not too bad if you consider that each child receives 20 plates of food for this amount paid. Some parents grumbled at the idea that they need to pay the 10 lempiras. I think it because those who were grumbling had 4-6 children in school at the same time and weren’t sure how they were going to come up with the extra monies. But as one mother said as she worked the first morning, “I’m here serving the Lord and my children even though I don’t have much and I have 6 children enrolled in this school. She also said that she wants to give more and the next day she brought in a bag full of onions, green peppers, and chicken to help with the next meal. That is the heart of a Christian, a willingness to give more than what is required of them.

The first week went well considering many of the mothers would come in 30 minutes late and had a negative spirit in them. Mario a brother of the faith who has worked with us for 8 years  in prison and also in helping us to start the other two lunch programs. We both stopped and prayed over the mothers who were working in the kitchen. The tempo changed. The mothers started to smile as seen in the second photo. Joy started to fill the kitchen. Thursday came and I brought Christian Pamphlets to witness God’s love to them. It was interesting to see them sit down and take a few minutes and read about God’s desire and love for a relationship with them. The pamphlet had hard questions for them to answer. One mother refused to take a pamphlet. So I waited and prayed. While the children were lined up I visited the children and handed them a pamphlet as well. One little girl asked for an extra one and I said sure. She took it and ran into the kitchen and gave it to the one who refused. This mother with hesitation took the pamphlet and read it. She smiled and said, “I do need to change.” How do we serve? We have the children come with their plates and cups and form a line by grade. They enter one door as seen in the 3rd photo and receive their food and move forward to receive their fruit drink. They go back to their classroom or sit under a tree and have lunch. Their lunch is served at 9:30 am and they have a ½ hour. With now three lunch programs going we are serving 915 hot meals daily. This is 915 children who are not going through the day hunger and malnourished.

YOU CAN HELP

God has a plan to feed his children and we are doing this one school at a time. If you feel led to help out but cannot come down to Honduras to serve but in your heart you want to help in an extra ordinary way, you can. We are half way through the Santa Margarita School and will be opening the lunch program there and feeding another 170 students. We are looking for those who would be interested in donating funds to purchase the utensils, electric stove, commercial gas stove, pots, pans, and so much more that costs our ministry over $3,000 to outfit a kitchen. If you feel led to be a part of feeding children and want to donate towards this lunch program please send a check to: Border Buddies Ministries, PO Box 1254, Elmira NY 14902 and ear mark your check lunch Program. Thank you!
