Head Lice In The Schools

When team #8 came down in May some of the team members noticed that the students at the Fuerzas Armadas School had lice. We went and inspected the heads from various grades and found that many of them where indeed full of lice, eggs and some had cases of infection in the scalp. One of the team members donated enough money for us to purchase 193 bottles of shampoo and combs for us to use and treat the children. When we purchased the needed supplies we thought that all we had to do was to inspect each child and then provide the shampoo and comb to child and they would wash their own hair in their own homes. Well that wasn’t the case. The Director and teachers of Fuerzas Armadas School came to us and explained that if the children went home with the kits they would never start the process because they would hide the kits from their mothers. I know this sounds crazy to us as adults in why would a child from grades 1-6 would want to hide such a blessing like this from their parents. Well remember they don’t want to get in trouble fro bringing home lice and also it isn’t too cool to have. The smaller grade obviously needed help. So Glenda, Carolina and I took 3 days to wash and treat 193 children. This meant that we had to rinse, wash with the shampoo, and then rinse again and comb out the lice. We made it fun for the kids. Especially for the girls who really didn’t want to be seen getting treated for lice. All in all it went well and we have knocked out the lice problem in this school. The mothers were very happy and felt blessed to be helped out with this problem.
